The "Open burning: Impacts on Environment and Health" Photo Contest and the "3Rs for a Better Tomorrow" Poster Contest in Vietnam

Within the framework of Component (IV) Education and Awareness Raising of the Project "Demonstration of Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP) in Open Burning Practices in Response to the Stockholm Convention on POPs", the two contests including a Photo Contest with the theme "Open Burning: Impacts on Environment and Health" (for students 15 to 20 years old) and a Poster Contest with the theme of "3Rs for a Better Tomorrow" (for pupils 10 to 14 years old) have been organized in Vietnam.

The launching ceremony for the two contests was held on 30 June 2016 in Ha Noi. The launching ceremony was organized with an attendance of over 100 people who were the leaders and representatives from units under Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA), professional photographers and artists, pupils and students, media and news agencies. 01 trailer of the contests was produced and broadcasted widely all over the country.

With the dates of submission for the entries ranging from from 30 June to 31 August 2016, the two contests have received a large attention from the public and numerous entries from all over the country were submitted. The Photo Contest received over 300 entries while over 2,000 posters were drawn and submitted. The Fanpage (available at https://www.facebook.com/ongkinh.moitruong) of the contests has an average of over 7,000 page views since the launching ceremony. The two panels of judges of the two contests gathered in Ha Noi in September to judge and to select the best entries.

Following up on this on 22 November 2016 in Ha Noi, an award ceremony for the two contests was organized to recognize and honor the winners. The winners, their parents and teachers enjoyed the event. The ceremony was attended by many which includ the panels of judges, VEA's leaders and numerous reporters and journalists. A news segment about the ceremony was broadcasted on Ha Noi Television.

For the photo contest, there were twenty-two (22) awards delivered to the winners, including the 1st, two (2) 2nd and three (3) 3rd prizes as well as fourteen (14) consolation prizes and two (2) People’s Choice prizes. For the poster contest, there were ten (10) awards delivered to the winners, including the 1st prize, two (2) 2nd prizes, three (3) 3rd prizes and four (4) consolation prizes.

The first prize winning entries from the photo and poster contests were submitted to UNIDO Fanpage for online vote for the select the regional prizes on October 2016.
